Finishing is such a fascinating subject! We have tried to answer your most common questions about our finishing services. If you find that your question is not addressed on this page, please email us at FirstPrint@FirstPrintFinishing.com or call us from 8:00 am t

l How much gripper do you need?

Please allow 1/2” on the long edge of the printed sheet. We always prefer to use the same grippers and side guides you used during the printing     process.

l What is a letterpress score? A matrix score?

Matrix is a pre-formed channel used to help obtain the best letterpress score possible. A letterpress score is a score created by a steel rule. When steel rules are used in combination with matrix scores, the stock is scored between the rule and the matrix, producing a very deep, sharp, crisp score.

l Why is it important for First Print to know the gripper and side guides you used to print your jobs?

Most often, our die cutting, scoring, foiling, and/or embossing must register to your printed sheet.   By using the same gripper and side guides as you did on your press, we can more easily and accurately register our processes to your printing. For the same reason, it is best to discuss gripper and side guide positions prior to the beginning of your print job. This is even more important if you are printing in multiples, but we have to cut the job to fewer up in order to finish it. As you know, our gripper will almost always be on one of the long edges of your sheet. Finally, in general, the gripper edge should not be die cut.
